1. Install fences, lights and cameras

The first step against theft is having sufficient security. Fences and lighting, show that there is at least a certain level of protection of the goods, and thereby inhibits  potential theft. It’s especially effective if you can make the thief feel observed even before getting into the construction area.

2. Surround small equipment with larger equipment

Another easy technique is to make life extremely difficult for thieves  and limit opportunities for a fast removal of goods. A way to go about this is to surround easily move-able equipment equipment such as smaller drills and pipes in secure locations surrounded by larger assets that are difficult to move without making a commotion; in order to mask them from any intruder. This situation makes it almost impossible for somebody to steal a worthy quantity without being noticed.

3. Track your assets (NFC or RFID Tags)

Use technology to have total control over your equipment, wherever it is. You can use asset tracking solutions to know where your equipment are in real-time with GPS coordinates. This is the best solution and very effective against theft. There are different offers for different cases, but this technology  is usually surprisingly cheap and very reliable. Using NFC tags can also tell you other information, like who was the last worker in charge of the equipment.

4. Maintain a clear and controlled chain of custody

Having a transparent record of everyone that used the equipment is a good way to know where the equipment is and decreases the chances of  loss or theft.  Of course, this can be very time consuming if you need to have somebody tracking these activities and employees respectively. Luckily, this is something covered by asset tracking solutions, as mentioned above.

5. Make sure your security patrols are taking tours

It’s known that sometimes the guards are not performing the tasks they are supposed to do, especially if they only need to fill a paper form and there is no other control system. One very good solution is a combo of NFC and mobile devices, where the guard has to actually go to the NFC checkpoints in order to scan them.

6. Have an after-hours security system

Most robberies take place at night, when it’s easier to access spots where equipment is stashed. On huge construction sites it’s hard to have eyes everywhere. A simple security system can help  spot intruders and put a stop to any suspicious activity.
